Best Shout Outs: Ashcroft. Especially to Kanye West.
Best Sartorial Choices: Ashcroft. He don't need no Pretty Green.

@thethirdreunion - do you think RA became a bit of a knuckle dragger after meeting LG or not?

the last beady eye record was miles better than any Richard Ashcroft album and Liam Gallagher has been a better songwriter since 2002. I don't know if he's improved more than Richard declined, but he's pretty good now and Richard...well, he's got a great voice. That's it. Watching him perform is painful and I will never hear anything from These People again.

Best songwriter: Ashcroft - agreed - the phrase is damned with faint praise
Best frontman: Ashcroft - the drug years, yes; the gas mask period, no
Best singer: Ashcroft (especially nowadays) debatable, both have their moments
Best improviser: Ashcroft - no idea what that means
Best musician: Ashcroft - neither can be classed as musicians

Credit where credit is due, Liam is a surprisingly good songwriter from time to time despite his loutish behavior and frequent mediocrity -- Songbird, Better Man, etc. I'd always assumed Noel was all the talent in the band but Beady Eye was surprisingly good while it lasted--liked both of their records better than Noel's first, though his second was a return to form.

That being said, Richard is sort of like Noel and Liam rolled into one, with a lot more going on. Oasis were a great band in their own way but Richard with his shamanic rock god thing and more emotional material brought a lot more to The Verve and to his solo career than Liam did with Oasis or Beady Eye. Richard is a much better singer and songwriter than either, even if he has a smaller set of greatest hits in some ways.

There is a maturity and mastery to the best of These People -- They Don't Own Me, Picture of You, etc. -- that I don't expect Liam can reach on his own, but we'll see.

As for the question of whether Liam influenced RPA for the worse, one of the most interesting things about the still-unissued 1990 demos and the recent Northern Soul bonus tracks is how pop-oriented and wannabe Black Crowes and Stone Roses Ashcroft always wanted to be, long before Urban Hymns and more than what made the early releases for the most part. Oasis may have enabled him to an extent but those threads and the dream of being a pop star had always been there.

Noel is a musician and a genuine band leader. Unlike the other two self-aggrandising pillocks.

Has it actually been confirmed that Ashcroft is going to appear on the new Liam album?

Harsh on Dickie there, he was the lead influence on Verve's most successful album. When he assumed control, the band hit their commercial peak. You couldn't imagine for a minute Liam saying to Noel, "Right, **** off, ah'kid....I'm writin the songs for What's The Story" and it being anywhere near the triumphant success it was.

As well as that, you kind of get the feeling that it was Richard and his ambition to make Verve huge, and his desire to be a rock star, which meant **** actually got done and released, on the other hand Nick is just a bit too much of a perfectionist and perhaps a procrastinator to lead.

Ashcroft never led Verve like Noel led Oasis. Noel was the top dog without question. Can't imagine Noel ever begging Liam to come back to help him out with an album.

What - are you suggesting Ashcroft BEGGED McCabe back? Wasn't it recently revealed that he'd already approached 2 different guitarists before going back to McCabe?

And how is Noel Gallagher any more of a musician than Ashcroft? They're both fairly limited in their guitar skills. And don't try and suggest Gallagher's solo material isn't a load of boring going-through-the-motions guff.

One is much more limited that the other. By limited, I mean laughably play-in-a day limited.

No way, Noel is more than competent at playing lead guitar, RA couldn't even come close to what he does on guitar, no way...

Anyone who has ever picked up a guitar would know the difference between NG and Richard.

Go back and watch Champagne Supernova live in 1998 from the Be Here Now tour, it stretches out to about ten minutes, Noel in total control of the whole thing pushing the solo forward.

Richard learned the basis chords back in the mid-1990s, and hasn't progressed from there on. He is exactly as good as he was when he first learned the chords. Look at something like They don't Own me, three chords, round and round, it's begging for a change and he just plods on for 6 minutes.

Would anyone like to link up RA doing anything remotely inereresting with a guitar?

And I don't mean pretending to play it like a vilolin in some wanky video.

RA is more talented than LG, in terms of vocals, songwriting (compare their best songs), and performance.

NG led Oasis more than RA led verve overall, but verve were a far, far better band.

NG is the better guitarist, but even RA would say it's his weak point.

This is possibly the most depressing thread I've ever read on this forum, and there's been some stiff competition.

Agreed, but I think we're ignoring the fact that Andy Bell was in this band. Naturally, I attribute the good songwriting to him.
