From his Facebook page:

Quote:
2 x historic The Verve guitars for sale:
Red Strat as seen in many Verve pics aka "spike" bought for spike Milligan as a gift. Landed with me.
Gibson Les Paul standard 57 VOS reissue. Offers starting at £2000 each.
The past two years have been hard on my bank balance.

Quote:
I've had an offer for Spike (red strat) at £2300. To change hands with photo and signing 31st May. I have loads of other guitars to sell, obviously not as auspicious as this guy but if you want a bit of Verve, black submarine recording history, get involved. Don't feel sad about it. I've wanted a more zen life, relinquishing possessions etc. and these days I'm most productive in front of my Mac. x

The past week can't have helped financially.

NM mentioned the amount they were out due to the tour pulling was 6000 pounds on his FB.

I'm sad, even if Nick says not to be! Maybe I should put an offer on one...

**** it, I'm doing it.

It's a bit sad when a musician has to sell instruments for money.

I would like to send Nick some cash in exchange for all the hours of sonic wonder. Is there a page for that?

You could ask him for his PayPal info.

Someone from the board may be bidding on Spike, his Red Strat.

Very cool guitar that given its past and the most important piece historically I've seen for sale so far. More tasty stuff today too!

Didn't he play that the nights we saw them at the Roundhouse?

I like to think between us (20+ regular members), the Funny Farm and other music fans we could easily raise the 2 grand so he can keep his guitar. I'm good for a donation.

Would rather it was done quickly and quietly though and not posted all over social media. He's not a charity case but it would be a nice gesture from music fans. Can it be done?

I agree but someone would have to confirm with Nick he actually wants to keep it (and that's the guitar that's most special to him - I would imagine it is).

I think it's pretty normal for bands to have a clear-out after an album or tour is completed but it is unusual it's handled by them in person and with such honesty about finances etc. It certainly seems a much larger-scale clear-out than the initial FB posts at the top of this page made it seem and makes you wonder how much is tied up in the entire collection. If someone has £100k+ of equipment for instance and wants to free up some money (and storage space) that would be entirely understandable. I agree it's sad if there are guitars which have a strong personal attachment - as a guitar/bass player/hoarder myself it's surprising how attached you get to wood, wires and metal.

You're on the money here, I've been discussing with Nick and it's pretty clear that he wants to dematerialize and simplify. I think he's getting tired of people saying "no! it's a crime! I'm so sad for you!" It's his attempt to consciously purge and conquer his gear acquisition syndrome (GAS). I'm of the same mindset, honestly, but if my favorite musician of all time is downsizing his collection, I'm inclined to make an exception. ;)

The good news is, it seems like most everyone buying stuff off him is a friend in some way, so I'm sure if he REALLY regretted selling something he could get it back without too much trouble. I know that would be true in my case at least.

Spot on that and couldn't agree more. I think most hoarders are the same, they're aware their collection may be (probably is) out of hand but parting can be difficult. The "rip off the band-aid" approach is admirable. I've had (and have at least been trying to stick to) a one-in, one-out policy in the last couple of years. It seems like a win-win situation anyway.

So much gear but so little output over the years.

From FB:

"IMPORTANT: change of heart regarding selling my red Strat aka"Spike". I know some of you are contemplating selling stuff to fund purchase of Spike so I feel duty bound to halt proceedings right away.
I've had all kinds of reactions to selling that guitar, but generally people closest to me say "you can't". Casey also talks about "the red guitar" all the time, Si Jones and wife kindly offered to buy it from as did old friend Dave Halliwell. I can't burden friends with a financial hit like that and if they're perceiving personal value contra to my unsentimentality, alongside everyone else's "grief" for want of a better word, then I should do the sensible thing and listen to advice. I've managed to autoerase most of my history several times, maybe it's time to sip doing that.
Everything else is still up for grabs.
I think the sensible fund raiser is #1 Les Paul. When I realised the Verve was fucked again I smashed it in fury at the Roundhouse gig. Maybe Hard Rock Cafe or some such dig that kind f thing.
Apologies for the u-turn and disappointment it may have caused. Nick x"

Hah - I remember that.

He was just then realizing that the Verve were fucked again?

Jesus, that was like a week after they started touring again (November 2007), long before Forth even came out...

Did that happen on stage or off?

As I remember it, Simon sent Nick a text after the gig asking if he was OK. Nick texted back saying something like "Not really - Si is worse." We were all saying "Fuuuuuuck. Not again."

I have a small clip somewhere (I mean very brief) of Nick smashing his guitar.

edit: Found it. For literally half a second about 1 second in he swings his guitar in the air.
