Eh I have to agree with him. Maybe I'm just getting older but much of the indie/alternative these days does nothing for me, even pop music is hit or miss. I blame hipsters for ruining music. Of course RPA is just adding "**** to the pile".

Didn't he release his last album on an indie label?

‘I’d rather listen to Rihanna than 90% of this critically-acclaimed ****’

Would he be saying this had he not failed to win the critics over with his solo material?

Christ. He's entitled to his opinion, but even the Richard Ashcroft of 2006 wouldn't recognise this guy.

Richard has always hated the indie scene going all the way back to the early days in Verve. A lot of indie music is ****, its full of pretentiousness that masks lack of actual talent and skill.

Not trying to sound jaded but that's the state of a lot of music, everythings become more about personality than musical talent.

I'm sure rolling person can chime in, since he was in radio, but the worst thing that happened to popular music is losing monoculture. Nowadays you can get on Pandora or Spotify which can cater to whatever your pre-existing tastes are and are much less likely to ever encounter new music outside of your tastes.

We just ain't listening to the same thing anymore. Music has become too widely dispersed to ever have the same impact that say the Beatles or Stones did in the 60s.

And speaking of the 60s, we don't really have a counter culture movement today that gives rise to music that has anything interesting to say or produces legendary songwriters. A lot of music is just so formulaic, just look at the popularity of pop country. Same tempo, melodies, key, etc in whatever the current top 10 songs are.

That's why I say hipsters ruined pop music, it signaled the end of counter culture movements in America. Instead of there being a radical political element within those movements, now its consuming that into a stupid tshirt you can buy at Urban Outfitters.
