Ever hear the phrase, its not you, its me? Well that is how I felt during last nites show.
Richard writes catchy songs, knows how to perform them, but its just not worth me seeing him
live anymore. Its not him, its me.

I was fortunate enough to see the verve at the 9:30 club in Wash DC and other US points that year.
They were spectacular, best bend I had and ever will see. Seeing Richard live in Philly and NYC after the verve in the early
2000s was still exciting for me, although obviously different.

Now in my mid 40s, I am probably a bit of a curmudgeon. I had to commute 3 hours one way just to
get to NYC. Watching him perform Sonnett and Science of Silence is all nice and good, but not really worth
my effort to get there. These days Richard is at his best when he goes off script, when he adds to songs.
Last nite he played a seemingly 12 minute version of This is How It Feels which was by far the best thing he did. Hopefully it ends up on YouTube.

I had to be a slave to the train schedule out of NYC so I admittedly left about 9 or 10 songs in. Fittingly, walking out on Break the Nite with Color didn't make me sad. At that point, I found the show boring. Just doesn't do anything for me.

Someone had shouted Make it Til Monday during the show, which made Richard laugh and utter some kind of remark. At a few points I was going to shout Sun The Sea or Already There, but I just couldn't do it to him. Break the Nite with Color is what Richard has become. If someone asked me about Richard and the Verve, I'd tell them about Six O'Clock, A Storm in Heaven, etc. Some of his new stuff is catchy, etc, but is certainly not enough to get this 40 something guy back out to NYC to see him again.

I can relate. I feel same about a lot of 80s and 90s bands. I can't see morrissey, slowdive, etc without feeling like they need to hang it up. Their day has come and gone. Something about RA and the verve feels very unfinished though and if they can just fucking reform and put out some good *** ****, we'll see if they can get us excited about music again.

After the chicago gig, I'll report back.

Chromedream - I agree. I do think if they reunited they could produce spectacular stuff. You summed up my nite in NYC better than I did
when you said "they can get us excited about music again." That is how I would describe seeing him live last nite, he's just not terribly exciting.
(To put it mildly.) I still love Ashcroft for all his work. Just wish he'd see the light.

i convinced my best friend to go, I dragged him to a verve gig decades ago and he dug it. He lives in NYC and doesn't get out much anymore, young kids, etc

He texted me today.

"You're a fucking ******* dude"

Not that it will happen, but why would anyone take a reunion seriously anyway given that they despise each other?

Thanks for the recap, verve1995.

Funny, I saw both Morrissey and Slowdive last year and they were excellent. To each their own... I for one am certainly glad those two acts are still around and making music (same with Ride, Swervedriver, etc.). New Slowdive and Ride albums are sounding like potential classics already, even with just the few songs that have been debuted. And Swervedriver's most recent album is second only to Mezcal Head, IMO.

The fact is, musicians don't have to become **** as they grow older. They can actually get better and better if they aren't afraid to take risks. Radiohead's a great example of this. Unfortunately Richard doesn't seem to be in that category... hoping Nick's solo stuff proves that he is though. I've got high hopes.

Sums up my thoughts on his Liverpool gig last year. He can certainly be good, but true greatness escapes him.

Seconded. Elbow and The National also spring to mind

Attending the NY show, well most of it, I thought This is How was the best song of the nite. Has to be 10 min version. I figured someone would have posted the song on youtube, besides that 2 min snippet.

Ladies and gentlemen, one of the greatest British songwriters of all time.

"Don't care if you only got one song"
"I didn't wanna rock n' roll"

Definitely referencing BSS there, regarding the "one song." Jeeze.
