Richard played at SSE Hydro with tarped-off sections

Thu Apr 20, 2017 6:49 pm

DESPITE tarped-off sections of the SSE Hydro suggesting that Richard Ashcroft’s drawing power might have been overestimated

A mention of being more appreciated here and in Buenos Aires than in England raised an eyebrow, given that he has equally large venues lined up down south, but perhaps he feels he should be at Wembley. Sadly, he shouldn’t, and going purely by songs rather than stage presence, he shouldn’t have been here either. The sparkling jacket he wore on his entrance was more remarkable than material from last year’s These People album, with the one exception being the lively, unashamed pop of Out Of My Body, an eager, uptempo number with lyrical bite.

The rest, however, were less Mad Richard and more Bland Richard, bombastically earnest and seemingly targeted at folk who boringly insist there isn’t enough "proper music" these days. That meant Ashcroft and his band were armed with guitar, bass, drums and dull seriousness, going through the meat and potatoes rock of This Is How It Feels and cod-funk of Everybody Needs Somebody To Hurt. Ashcroft has never met a good four minute song that he didn’t want to extend unnecessarily, so older solo material was drawn out with tedious jamming, notably Music Is Power. Not like this, Richard.

It was dispiriting to see how the creative figure of years past, of sprawling psychedelia and chaotic, challenging rock, has embraced rock conservatism so thoroughly. Tracks from his old band only illustrated such deficiencies, with a crisp Velvet Morning, heart-tugging The Drugs Don’t Work and towering Bitter Sweet Symphony reminders of his old skills. They cast a shadow his current songs could not escape, no matter how many times he dropped to his knees or defiantly clenched his fist.

Depressing but unsurprising. I don't think he really has a fanbase anymore. Even the Funny Farm is quite quiet these days.

He played Manchester arena in 2006 with the entire upper tier tarped off

Why doesn't he just get over himself and play smaller venues? It's pathetic.

Leeds Arena tomorrow, capacity 13,500. Must be almost 22 years to the day since I saw Verve play at the Duchess of York in Leeds (now a Hugo Boss store), previewing ANS. Now here we are. Shadow boxing, sequin jackets, and Hold On. Amazing.

that article echo'd what we all have been saying I think.

why doesnt rich get the masses had an enourmous appetite for the verve, but not for him solo.
Why isn't this clear to him?

He gets it, and it eats away at him.

Hence the bitterness.

According to his Instagram there was a "massive fight" in the crowd at tonight's show.

Just so I can be sure, is this a way to literally cover up the fact that the gig was far from sold out?

The Funny Farm massive throwing their weight around again?

Looks like the bottom tier was curtained off, with plenty of spare seats up top.

I hear it was caused by the opening chords of Bright Lights being played. Someone shouted "ENOUGH" then chaos ensued ...

Hey, I like Bright Lights. He has worse songs and it tastefully rocks. Nice tablas. I have two nifty live versions, here is one of them for you collectors out there: https://www.sendspace.com/file/q63gd7 . I would have preferred that to the mediocre and overlong version of New York he played in New York (it was much better in Boston).

While there is something distinctly Spinal Tap about RPA's irrational behavior regarding venues (the Bowery 2011 was a better choice than Terminal 5), I can understand his frustration. The industry has changed so much and he is a much bigger draw as a festival act where a lot of people love a couple of songs we all know and are happy with sort of a more sensitive Oasis than for solo shows, though as a big Shaun Ryder fan I'd definitely want to go to see Black Grape too.

I really genuinely don't understand people hating These People quite as much as they do. Ashcroft solo will never be as good as The Verve, and he is cursed not only by how singularly great the band were but for how much they filled in the particular gaps in his songwriting, but for me the album finally solved the fundamental problems with bland production and performances on his earlier stuff vs. the excesses of UNOS. I'd prefer another Verve album but after all these years was happy with what I'd describe as a strong comeback and probably his best solo album overall. Apparently he considered releasing something a few years ago and decided to wait until he had something more consistent with more potential singles, and the album really benefited from that in a way I wish, say, Keys To The World had.

Indeed, he does. A lot of them.

How was RPA doing when he was touring for KTTW, did he have the same crowd sizes or more/less?

I agree with Sean. It's plainly obvious why people dislike These People as much as they do. It's a ten track album (a short list compared to some artist's output) and he still finds room for filler tracks (Songs of Experience, the title track). He doesn't play most of it live, and the one song which he should find room for (Picture of You), he won't play live. It's an album made by an aging rock star who has no idea how he fits in with the modern music world, which shows through the lyrics and music. He aims for catch-all anthems with generic plodding rock-lite tracks. The one thing that made him was back in his flat in Bath in 1995 when he sat and wrote songs for himself, Sonnet, Drugs, he was singing to himself and for himself. And the masses tuned in. But, it doesn't work the other way round. You can't generate a song directly for the masses.

So, to say that you don't understand why people dislike the album, then you are either trolling or you have little perspective on what Richard Ashcroft means to the world.

Do you think these reviews are a a hoax? Review after review, all saying the same thing, and you can't understand it? Come on, man.

All of his solo albums have redeeming qualities - even UNOS. But These People has nothing going for it. I can't stomach a second of it and it's sad for me to say that about Richard Ashcroft. I hate saying it but there isn't one song I enjoy. At a push They Don't Own Me but that's me desperately trying to find something. It's an incredibly poor album. One of the worst I've ever heard. :(

I don't know how you recover from an album that ****.

They Don't Own Me is better than anything and everything on UNOS.

These People isn't a good album, but UNOS is laughable through and through.

John Sheridan! God, I loved John Sheridan when he played for Leeds. Spent hours as a kid trying to take free kicks just like him.

Aye, he was a cracking player.

And for the second year in a row he's returned to manage Oldham in January and saved a team of no hopers from certain relegation. He's the biggest miracle worker since Jesus. ;)
