Some good debatage going on here.

Over four albums, would anyone make an argument for Doves being the better band?

Oooooh. This just got really good!
I love doves. They were utterly great. Every release, brilliant. But I don't think they were the better band, I think they were lacking something. Not sure what it was, either. Individually, as musicians, I think Verve bests them. Not that that's a reason. You don't have to be the best at something to be the better band, in my opinion, it's how it all gels. I think Richard's vocals were better if his lyrics always weren't. I'm not sure what it is exactly that doves lacked (in my opinion), but I don't think they were better than Verve, as a whole.

Doves - no.

if you discount the 4th albums of both: the chameleons - yes.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate in favour of doves.

First off, Kingdom of Rust is far better than Forth.

Secondly, I'd argue their crossover stuff was better (and they had more).

The lead singer is multi-talented. Also, not a ****.

Verve may have had that 'special something' over doves that you can't put your finger on, but this is quite an abstract argument.

Doves were more consistent.
Even the way they went off to do solo projects was more dignified.

[quote="Lil ed"]Come on, y'all know I going to make this post;

Black Crowes Lp's 2-4 are on par with Verve's. But live the Crowes would take them and I know bc I saw both bands at those times. 95 live Verve is sub par bc of all the **** going on. And I know most of you will roll eyes about TBC but the very band's board we are on were listening to Amorica, the 3rd Crowes album all during the making of ANS, so they were an influence on Verve, like it or not.

Amorica is a GREAT record!

There is zero debate in my brain. The Verve were the best ever. First track I heard was on a CMJ monthly mixed CD - Slide Away. Never has there been, or I doubt will there be, a better band in the world.

Used to love that magazine. Found quite a few bands via that CD. Usually around 15 to 20 new tracks a month, if I recall correctly. That's where I first heard Spritiualized, Ben Lee ... countless others.

Second best band from Wigan, that's for sure.

Doves better? Ha! Their first two albums are excellent, but they fell off hard after that. Saw them on the Lost Souls tour and they were awesome but the Verve were better in 2008. Doves, at their best, were as good as Forth, and if you factor in all the great songs that didn't make Forth even the Verve at their least-awesome are a lot better than Doves.

Take pin ups out and you have the greatest run of albums by anyone, ever. The only argument is which one is the best.

Nobody's even close to being that consistently great. Even the Beatles lost it at the end - yeah that's right, Abbey Road isn't good. Let's go.

Wow I thought I was the only one.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer is one of the worst Beatles songs ever.

Maxwell's is solid, it just happens to be the only song outside of the medley that seems a little more '68 White Album than '69 classic rock longhair era fabs. Still better than almost all of Macca's solo career.

The debate about Doves reminds me of when we were arguing about BRMC a few months back, both are eminently solid journeyman bands with great influences and their hearts in the right place but they just can't stack up to the legendary acts. For me Doves peaked on Lost Souls, Rise and a few others are about the height of that late 90s electronica and trip-hop infused psychedelia. Definitely some good stuff on each of their following albums but they didn't quite have the songs or singer or extra spark of genius to get more than a few tracks per album that could withstand coming back to again and again.

Exit Calm were kind of the same way and a band out of time, there just wasn't the sort of scene for their schtick that there used to be. Had they come out around 2001 or 2002 I could see them getting more buzz and achieving the moderate success of Doves, Starsailor, The Music, etc.

But Verve has a magic and an iconic timelessness that towers above them.

Please, just so I can retain the idea that you have an ounce of taste, take this statement back. It is wrong and you must know that.

The greatest band in the world is generally ****. Once in awhile this is not the case.

Beatles and Nirvana are good examples of being the best and not ****.

U2, Creed, Eagles, RHCP are just some examples of bands that have been "best" but are clearly ****. Radiohead too, ever since OK. Utter ****.

Verve have never been the greatest in the world. But they are the greatest to a select few listeners who possess exquisite taste.

Other random stuff...Dylan's Blood on the Tracks and Desire are the 2 best consecutive albums in the history of recorded music. David Bowie, RIP, was a superstar but his music is just meh. Popular with guys who have small dongs and suck at sports.

Doves and Exit Calm? Wtf? 99% of the world never even heard that stuff. Lucky bastards.
